Definition

This term refers to the first peoples that have inhabited a specific territory in the world, as well as their descendants. It is particularly used in Canada and North America, while the term ‘Aboriginal’ is preferred in Australia. Indigenous peoples have their own languages, cultures and traditions which include knowledge of ecological balance and the conservation of diversity. In Canada, three Indigenous peoples are officially recognized: First Nations, Inuit and Métis.
